The wildly romantic history of our giant house

Legends and legends

How Haymon Slayed Thyrsus

A long time ago, the giant Thyrsus lived in the giant house in Leithen on a rough, wind-blown alpine height near wildly towering rocky peaks.  When a second giant came from the Reihne and settled in the area, Thyrsus thought of displacing the stranger. They met on the meadow above the village now called Dirschenbach and attacked each other.

Heavily armoured, the giant Haymon aims with his sword at the head of his opponent Thyrsus, dressed in a peasant robe and armed with a torn out birch branch, who is defeated in battle. The ground drank itself full of the blood of the mortally wounded giant, who shouted in a dying voice. " Spritz Bluat, is for cattle and men guat!"

And with these words Thyrsus bequeathed to the peasants his Thysen blood, which had been highly esteemed for centuries as a folk remedy, which entered medicine 500 years later as Ichthyol.

Historical profile of the Giant House

In 1492 Emperor Maximilian ordered the hostel in the former watchtower in Leithen, the Giant House, to be converted into accommodation for his hunting guests.

In 1507 two frescoes were added to the south wall:

"Anna Selbtritt" (Mother Anna with St. Mary and the Child Jesus on her lap, flanked by two angels) and

larger than life the St. Christopher (in the background the castle of Fragenstein and the hermitage of Zirl).

In 1537 the fresco was placed on the north side. There are the coats of arms of Austria and Tyrol and the representation of the fight

between the giants Haymon and Thyrsus. According to tradition, the latter lived in this house.

1934 In the giant house was placed under monument protection.
